In fact, it's an entirely different story centered around a family whose lives have been affected by their traumatic experiences in the haunted house. Of course, the answer is simple: The television version of The Haunting of Hill House is not necessarily an adaptation of Shirley Jackson's novel. How (and why!) would anyone expand that into ten hours of television? But the book, which tells the tale of a group who spend time in a rumored haunted mansion as part of a parapsychological study, is a slim volume, less than 300 pages. You can also imagine how preemptively annoyed I was that the new version of Shirley Jackson's tale would be a series rather than a film-although I admit I was pleased that Mike Flanagan's show would use the full title of Jackson's novel (both movies shortened the title to The Haunting likely because of the similarly titled horror flick House on Haunted Hill, released in 1959 and remade in 1999).
In this adaptation, Steven Crain ( Michiel Huisman, Game of Thrones) is the author of The Haunting of Hill House, but it's an autobiography and not a gothic work of fiction. Shirley (likely a nod to Jackson) is one addition, and Steven, who series creator Mike Flanagan has confirmed is named after Steven Spielberg (who is also a huge fan of the novel) is another. Nell (Eleanor), Luke, and Theo are now Crain siblings, with Olivia and Hugh Crain being their parents, and two other siblings added for good measure. The Crain family becomes the focal point of the narrative, with each becoming a narrator, as we watch the events of Hill House unfold from their perspectives.
The Netflix series takes creative license with the source material by turning the characters into relatives. In the Netflix series, The Haunting of Hill House (2018), the character of Eleanor is portrayed as an unfortunate heroine of sorts, attempting to save her family from suffering a fate similar to her own. While Eleanor is the focus of the story, she is not the heroine in life or death.
Eleanor Vance ( Julie Harris, East of Eden) is beautifully portrayed providing the character with a convincingly timid and troubled demeanor.
